Join the Board
The purpose of the board of directors is to provide organizational leadership, direction, oversight, and to maximize P.E.C.A.'s ability to achieve its mission.
The board of directors is responsible for long range planning. It assesses the effects of national and international events on P.E.C.A.'s work, and establishes organizational vision and direction for the program.
The board of directions sets, reviews, and evaluates organizational policy. It ensures that P.E.C.A.'s programs are in keeping with its mission and core values, and reviews the mission statement for relevance.
The board is responsible for fiscal accountability. It approves and monitors the organization's expenses and income, and ensures that all of its resources are used appropriately.
The board maintains the stability of the organization. It is responsible for the recruitment, development, and retention of effective and ethical leadership.
The board is responsible for staff relations. It hires, and evaluates the performance of, the executive director. The executive committee is the final arbiter of all internal staff grievances.
The board members are ambassadors to the community.
Each board member will be actively involved in at least one of P.E.C.A.'s seven program areas: Cultural Education; School Construction; Sponsorship; Fundraising; Public Relations; Finance; and Nominating.
The board meets six times a year, on alternate months, beginning in January. The executive committee meets on alternate months beginning in February. A term is three years, beginning on January 1, and the monthly time commitment is 8-12 hours. The schedules for committee meetings vary.
The by-laws allow for 3-23 board members, but there are usually 8-15.

Being a P.E.C.A. board member has many rewards. It provides an opportunity to learn about the Afghan culture, history, and current situation, and a chance to develop relationships with others who are committed to children, education, and peace.
